Palembang Grand Mosque is one of the heritage of the
Sultanate of Palembang. The mosque was founded by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I or
Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin Jaya Wikramo starting in 1738 until 1748. It is said
that this mosque is the largest mosque in the archipelago at the time.
Palembang Grand Mosque was originally called Sultan Mosque
and was built in 1738 by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin I Jayo Wikramo. Dedication of
this mosque took place on 28 Jumada Beginning in 1151 H (May 26, 1748). The
first time the size of the mosque building was originally built in an area of 1080 square meters with a capacity of 1200 worshipers. The first
expansion is done by endowments Sayid Umar bin Muhammad Assegaf Altoha and
Sayid Ahmad bin Syech Sahab conducted in 1897 under the leadership of Prince Nataagama
Karta mangala Raden Ibn Mustafa Kamaluddin.
At the beginning of its construction (1738-1748), as the old
mosques in Indonesia, the Sultan Mosque is at first not have towers. Later
during the reign of Sultan Ahmad Najamudin (1758-1774) then built the tower
which is located a little apart in the west. Shape the tower as the tower
building tipped temples with curved roof shape. On the outside of the tower
there is a fenced patio that surrounds the body.
Forms mosque now known as the Grand Mosque, is not much
different as we see now. Its current form has undergone many times reshuffle
and expansion. At first improvement made by the Dutch government after a major
war in 1819 and 1821. After the repairs and then do the addition / expansion in
1893, 1916, 1950's, 1970's, and most recently in the 1990s. In the renovation
and construction work in the 1970s by Pertamina, made the building of the tower
so as to achieve its present form. Original tower with a Chinese-style roof
that was not torn down.
Expanding the second time in 1930. conducted again in 1952
by the Foundation for the expansion of the Grand Mosque in the year 1966-1969
to build a second floor addition so vast mosque till now 5520 square meters
with a capacity of 7750.
Great Mosque is an old mosque and is very important in the
history of Palembang. The mosque is about 259 years old and it is located in
the Village 19 Ilir, West Ilir District I, right in the meeting between Jalan
Merdeka and Jalan Sudirman, the center of the city of Palembang. Not far away,
there is a bridge. The mosque and the bridge has become a land mark city until
now.
In its history, the mosque is located in the center of the
kingdom was the center of Islamic study resulted in several important scholars
of his time. Shaykh Abdus Samad al-Palembani, Pack Fachruddin and Syihabuddin
bin Abdullah are some scholars who are in the mosque and has an important role
in the practice and discourse of Islam.
